Tirur is 43 kms south of Calicut, is an important Railway Station of the Shoranur-Mangalore section of the Southern railway. It is also a major fish and betel trading center.
Triur is the birthplace of the founder of Malayalam Literature Tunchan Ramanujan Ezhutassan. The place attracts large number of people on Vijaydashmi day for the ritual initiation of children into the world of learning.
