In the year 1721, the English factors felt the need to appease the Attingal Queen after alienating the local population by their "overbearing behaviour". They sent a set of presents to the Queen. The agents of the "Pillamar" demanded that the presents given to Queen should be given to them for transmission to the Queen. When they denied, few Englishmen were massacred on their way to the Queen, and the fort was laid under siege for nearly six months. The fort was relieved only when reinforcements for the English arrived from Talassery.
Similarly, the grant of Talassery was returned by Kurangoth Nair. He claimed that the territory to be under his control in alliance with one of the dissident Kolathiri princes, raided the Company's warehouse and inflicted heavy damage to property.
Attingal is also a birthplace of Vakkom Moulavi, who was one of the greatest renaissance leaders of Kerala. Vakkom Purushothaman.
There are other place of interest like Sarkara Devi Temple, Varkala Beach etc. Attingal Bus stand is the nearest bus station. Nearest railway station is Varkala, which is about 5 kms. and Trivandrum International Airport is about 30 kms from here. |
