Mandu is a historical place, situated about 42 kms south-east in the province of Malwa, had as its capital the ancient Hindu city of Dhar, 112 kms southwest of Indore (business capital of Madhya Pradesh), and about 300 kms southwest of Bhopal (capital of Madhya Pradesh).
The fortress enclosed an area of approximately 12 square miles within walls over 25 miles in circumference. In Mandu there are 61 monuments including fort wall protected and declared as monuments of national importance.
Mandu is perched along the Vindhya ranges at an altitude of 2000 feets, with its natural defenses, was originally the fort capital of the Parmar rulers of Malwa. It came under the sway of the Sultans of Malwa, the first of who named it Shadiabad i.e. 'ity of Joy'towards the end of the 13th century.
The rulers of Mandu built exquisite palaces like the Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Ornamental canals, baths and pavilions, as graceful and refined as those times of peace and plenty.
Try to make a day trip to Mandu from Indore, and spend a night here. In Mandu, there are limited Accommodation's so if you are visiting during the peak season, it is advisable to book your room in hotel in advance.
In winter', lots of international tourists converge in Mandu and local tourist converge during Monsoon season i.e. in July and August.
There are regular buses running from Dhar to Mandu. Dhar can easily accessible from Indore. There are direct buses from Indore too. Mandu can be reached from Bhopal via Indore. |
