INDIANENVIRONMENTPORTAL IS an online website launched recently. This has been initiated by efforts of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in partnership with the National Knowledge Commission (NKC), Government of India.

Presently, the portal is in English, but a media statement on its launch said portal managers plan to offer it in other languages too.

This is an effort to create a one-stop place for all information needs on the issue of environment. It is created to collate all information at one place, so that information is in the public domain, which will help to increase the discourse on it. It is an open platform, which will not only have information offered by the CSE, but from government documents, and information from civil societies. It will help increase public and media debate on the issue. Thousands of articles and documents are already online on it. If you have interest in environmental issues visit the site.

The portal has a lead article to create interest, a column on top news with links to its sources. It has a feature column, and directory of government institutions. Though information in the directory of government needs some updating as the fax numbers of some departments are missing and probably more information may be needed to help an online viewer. Since the effort is supported by the government, it is possible to insert the same on to the portal. It has an opinion column, thankfully people who feel passionately about an issue can contribute, and has information/links on books plus films online.

Unlike many other academic portals it has links to news, which adds newness everyday, and has a section on cartoons on the issue!

The portal plans to introduce detailed, ’how-to’ guides on green and best practices on areas like solar energy, organic farming, drip irrigation, wastewater treatment, rainwater harvesting and composting, which will be its real asset as it will help in increasing dissemination of good practices and possibly help to replicate the same in other places.

In case one forgets to visit the portal everyday one can sign up for daily news alerts, book and article alerts and RSS feeds. For smooth surfing it has links via tags of the items one needs to browse a site guide. Portal managers plan to help build an online research community and a chance will be given to contribute articles and share research, opinion, data, which will really help in engaging people to it. They may need to build that fast to make it a citizen’s forum on environment. The portal also has online activity sheets to engage school children on environment, and last but not the least, it has links to ’Down to Earth’, magazine of CSE.
